Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k release date
The creators of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K are gradually inculcating new features in this camera that extend the functionality of this compact 4K camera. This time, we, the manufacturer, added the ability for directors (videographers) to record Blackmagic RAW video.
In April 2018, Bm released Pocket Cinema 4K, the long-awaited successor to the compact camera for demanding developers. Matrix Four Thirds with a dynamic range of 13 EV, shooting at 4K RAW at 60 frames per second, instant shooting, extensive functions and ergonomics, as well as a small and durable body are the most important features of this model.
What’s new?
The manufacturer updated the webcam and introduced, among other things, a feature that allows users to recalibrate the pixels in the camera. Now Blackmagic has released another update – this time to version 6.2, which further expands the functionality of Pocket Cinema 4K.
As the manufacturer indicates, this is a response to requests from the most advanced users. The new software finally supports and allows recording in Blackmagic RAW format with a fixed recording of 3: 1, 5: 1, 8: 1 and 12: 1. In addition, the user can now select the file size to save in order to adapt it to the corresponding requirements and preferences. Until now, this format and such functions were only available on the URSA Mini Pro camera.
Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K will be able to record more than two hours of material in 4K resolution in Blackmagic RAW format. The camera costs about 1300 dollars. At this price, we will also receive a license for the DaVinci Resolve Studio program, which costs about $ 300. So far Pocket Cinema 4K is available mainly in the European and American markets.
The Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K camera is equipped with a 4/3 “sensor that allows you to make recordings in resolutions of 4096×2160 (4K DCI), 3840×2160 (Ultra HD), 1920×1080 (HD) at speeds up to 60 fps.
Supported codecs:
- Blackmagic RAW Constant Bitrate 3:1, 5:1, 8:1, 12:1
- Blackmagic RAW Constant Quality Q0, Q5
- ProRes 422 HQ QuickTime, QuickTime, LT QuickTime, Proxy QuickTime
In Full HD mode, the deceleration speed is up to 120 fps. Micro Four Thirds lens mount allows the use of original Pocket Cinema Camera light lenses with PL, C, EF lenses. Lenses of other models can be used with an adapter.
The doubled ISO range of up to 25,600 for low-light operation and 13 levels of dynamic range allows HDR images of excellent quality to be obtained.
Use the internal CFast 2.0 and SD / UHS-II card slots for recording, or use the USB-C output to record longer clips recorded on an external drive.
The 5-inch touchscreen LCD Pocket Cinema Camera 4K reduces the need for an external monitor, and the full-sized HDMI port allows you to output a signal to a larger display. The menu and interface are the same as on the Mini-camera URSA and 3D LUT.
Audio features include Pro-style mini-XLR powered microphones in the background, a 3.5-mm jack and a built-in stereo microphone. Additional features include the same Blackmagic OS as the URSA Mini, and a Bluetooth remote control. The license key for DaVinci Resolve Studio is supplied with a camera for universal post-production control.
Carbon composite assembly Pocket Cinema Camera 4K provides lightweight strength and durability.
The camera is comfortable in the hand, it seems to be overall, but not heavy. I carry it in my ONA Bowery bag, which is perfect for accessories and a single lens.
The menu is intuitive and responsive. At the bottom of the camera there are two guide holes for proper centering of accessories.
When shooting with Canon 16-35 IS f / 4L, vignetting was not visible at the far end.
I believe that the camera has a fairly good buffer for 19 seconds and 30 frames.
Deficiencies identified in the instance used
The battery door does not fit snugly. The attached battery does not correctly transfer the percentage of remaining charge and does not charge externally through the Canon LC-E6. With an almost discharged battery, the charge icon only slightly decreased on the screen. However, Canon batteries and even Watson transmit data to the monitor correctly.
In the considered instance there was a factory problem with the battery, the camera was turned off without warning. Canon or Watson batteries warn you by 20% and can be charged externally. Turning on takes about 5 seconds.
No other deficiencies in the work were revealed.
